The Breton history review Istor Breizh announces the publication of its first book, dedicated to the relations between Brittany and Spain from the 14th to the 17th century. This book highlights a little-known period during which the Bretons played an active role in commercial and political exchanges on a European scale.
Driven notably by the trade of canvases and fabrics, as well as by dynastic alliances between the Duchy of Brittany and the Kingdom of Castile, Bretons settled and left a lasting mark on certain regions of Spain at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. This presence is today materialized by a bas-relief inaugurated on Rue des Bretons in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Andalusia) on May 16, 2026.
The work is part of an initiative to highlight a history often forgotten, overshadowed by the subsequent political developments that Brittany has experienced.
Several historians and researchers have contributed to this collective effort: Robert Omnès, former professor at the University of Western Brittany and specialist in Spanish linguistics; Antonio Moreno Ollero, medieval historian; Enrique Javier Román Martell, specialist in the first circumnavigation of Magellan-Elcano; Guy Saupin, emeritus professor of modern history in Nantes; and Gildas Salaün, in charge of the numismatic collections at the Dobrée Museum.
The book is offered at a price of 18 euros including shipping by subscription until May 31, before increasing to 24 euros.
At the same time, Istor Breizh continues to publish its journal, the fourth issue of which, still available, notably explores the history of Breton devotional medals and their industrial dimension in the 19th century.
